Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko admitted that a "mistake" was made in the set-up of Max Verstappen's car, in first practice ahead of the British Grand Prix.
The four-time world champion complained of the handling of the RB21 and had to settle for 10th on the timesheets at Silverstone.
Verstappen found himself almost six-tenths adrift of Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, who set the pace in warm conditions.
To add to the reigning world champion's woes, he was behind both Racing Bulls drivers but ahead of Arvid Lindblad, who replaced Yuki Tsunoda in first practice.
Marko put Verstappen's bad session down to a mistake by the Milton Keynes-based outfit, giving it something to investigate ahead of second practice.
"Understeer, oversteer and that varied from corner to corner," is how Marko summed up the practice to Sky DE .
"So there is a mistake somewhere, because there are big differences, also between the long run and short run. So we have to look at what is wrong.
"With this performance we are not close to the podium, but we now have to make sure we get the car back in order. We have made some changes, but there is something that is not right at all."
Verstappen also ran an upgraded floor in the opening session of the grand prix; however, only his car has received the new part due to a lack of time.
"Yes, because given the time constraints we were not able to make the same part for both cars," confirmed Marko.
"Arvid Lindblad did an excellent job, though. He was clear in his feedback and well on the mark in the long run."
