Lewis Hamilton has vowed to continue wearing jewellery during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend and beyond, as he plans to ignore the deadline set by the FIA to remove certain piercings. The seven-time World Champion has threatened to keep his piercings and "wear four watches" in Monte Carlo, despite the FIA making clear that he has just three weeks to remove his jewellery items. Hamilton has sported piercings throughout his racing career with the rule, first introduced before his F1 career began, having been loosely enforced. However, at the 2022 Miami Grand Prix weekend, jewellery was added to the scrutineering checklist, with teams now needing to confirm that their drivers are not in breach of any jewellery rules. A failure to do so could result in punishment.
Hamilton: I'll get an exemption for the rest of the year
Hamilton revealed he was unable to remove some of his piercings in time for the Miami weekend and was thus awarded an exemption for the event, as well as for the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix in a fortnight. But the Mercedes driver will need to remove his piercings in time for the Monaco Grand Prix (27-29 May) or risk punishment. Hamilton has, however, stated that he will not be doing so. Speaking to select members of the media, including RacingNews365.com , he said: "I get an exemption here [and] I'll get one for the rest of the year. "Wedding rings are allowed," he added. "I'll wear four watches next time."
