George Russell caused the first red flag of the Singapore Grand Prix weekend following a crash at Turn 16.
Russell hit the barrier with just under 20 minutes of the session in the books.
The Mercedes driver was approaching Turn 16 equipped with the medium compound before the rear snapped and sent him into the barrier.
The car hit the barrier nose-first and stripped the front wing from the car, as well as inflicting a puncture on the front left tyre.
Russell managed to get back to the pit lane on his own power before the car was wheeled into the garage by the Mercedes mechanics.
A team radio message broadcast shortly after the crash highlighted Russell's surprise regarding the crash, labelling the incident as “weird”.
Russell enters the Singapore race weekend following a strong performance last time out in Baku, where he crossed the line in second place despite battling a respiratory illness.
