George Russell 'past disappointment' after latest F1 title blow

George Russell has insisted he is “past disappointment” after suffering another setback in his pursuit of a maiden F1 title.

Russell lined up in sixth place for the start of Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix as he sought to enter the summer break on a high.

However, his car jumped into anti-stall and he shuffled to the rear of the field, forcing him into a recovery drive.

The Briton crossed the line in seventh place but still lost valuable points to team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who now sits 59 points ahead in the drivers' standings.

It added to the list of setbacks Russell has endured this season, but the 28-year-old is keen to avoid focusing on what has gone wrong for him at recent rounds.

“I'm past the point of disappointment now,” he told media including RacingNews365. 

“If I'm continuing to be disappointed with everything that goes on, I'll just be disappointed every day of the week. 

“So it's sort of like 'I got to stay positive'. Obviously, another technical issue that completely ruined the race. 

“But to tell you some positives, the pace was very strong. The team said it was as strong as anybody out there, which I haven't been for probably three races now.

“But it's just unbelievable, the list of things that have happened this season.

Explaining his start issue, Russell added: “I was on the throttle holding the revs, and then all of a sudden, about four seconds before the lights went out, the engine just started revving all over the place.

“I was reacting with my throttle, and it was doing nothing.

“It was a brand new engine, it was something we saw in pre-season at some points. But no idea.”

F1 now enters an off period for several weeks, offering Russell a chance to reset and come back in the second half of the campaign with a fresh mindset.

“The result was shit, but the things that I could have controlled, they were just okay,” he said.

“I usually don't feel like I need a break. This year, I definitely feel like I need one.”
