George Russell highlights 'important' victory after being 'tested psychologically'

George Russell has stated he was “tested psychologically” by his recent run of difficult form before his return to the top step of the podium.

Russell secured his second grand prix win of the campaign on Sunday at the Austrian Grand Prix, climbing to the top step of the podium for the first time since the opening round in Australia.

In recent events, Russell has lost touch with team-mate Kimi Antonelli, and was left 68 points adrift after Monaco.

However, that gap has now been narrowed to 40 points, with Russell able to outscore Antonelli at the last two rounds.

“The tough races definitely test you psychologically,” Russell said after his Austria victory.

“These last two weekends for me have been vitally important to remind myself I can do it. 

“Single lap and race pace have been very strong this weekend and on a track that is probably not very well suited to my style. 

“So I'm looking forward to heading to Silverstone next week, and seeing all the home fans, I'm sure it's gonna be great.”

Russell's closest contender during the race was Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who crossed the line just a handful of seconds behind the Briton.

Its boost in form came at a weekend in which it introduced a significant car upgrade, and the Milton Keynes-based squad's pace did not go unnoticed by Russell.

“Max and Red Bull were incredibly quick this weekend, so kudos to them.”
