George Russell's F1 title hopes suffered a seismic blow with a late retirement in the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
Russell was running in third, one position behind Mercedes team-mate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli behind a safety car when the Briton's W17 suffered a suspected power unit issue.
Russell went into the race 66 points behind Antonelli, and was set to lose another three points to Antonelli if they had held their positions behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen to the chequered flag.
The safety car had been summoned for Williams' Alex Albon retiring and pulling off onto the side of the Sepang International Circuit with a gearbox failure, and his car eventually needing to be removed by a crane.
At the start of lap 51 of 55, Russell pulled to one side, parking his car effectively at the end of the pit lane, leaving him 84 points adrift of Antonelli in the drivers' standings after his third DNF of the season, after the 20-year-old finished runner-up to Verstappen at the chequered flag.
