Pierre Gasly says he wants to push his AlphaTauri team to the front of the F1 grid in 2022, as the Frenchman seeks to build on the momentum of a promising two years back at the Faenza outfit. After a chastening half-season with Red Bull in 2019, Gasly was demoted back to the then-Toro Rosso squad that he had begun his F1 career with in 2018. However, Gasly has been a man transformed since returning to Toro Rosso - renamed AlphaTauri in 2020 - taking a shock win in a chaotic Italian Grand Prix, and scoring regular points to cement his status as one of the best drivers outside F1's top teams. F1's rules reset for 2022 means every team will be starting with a blank sheet of paper, and Gasly is keen to push AlphaTauri to the top. "The last two or three years have been really improving for AlphaTauri and Toro Rosso, and I want to keep getting better results and keep pushing the team to the front of the grid," Gasly said at the launch of AlphaTauri's 2022 challenger, the AT03. "Coming into a new season, it's a big challenge for all the teams. Maybe there can be a very good surprise, which is what I hope for, but maybe it's going to take time, and maybe we need to wait for development at the start of the year, and in that case, we will have to be more patient. "We just need to be mentally prepared for all situations, but I'm not going to stop pushing the team until we get very good results."
No change for Gasly in the gym
The new rules for 2022 are expected to see the cars behave very differently from their predecessors. However, Gasly says this hasn't caused him to drastically alter his training regimen. "I will say the preparation hasn't changed so much," he added. "Ever since I started in F1, [I have] always pushed [myself] more and more to improve, to become stronger, to have better endurance, to be a more complete athlete. "Maybe we did some fine-tuning based on some information we receive from the team on how the car is going to behave, but nothing major. "It's mainly work at the simulator with the guys, because the car is going to feel different, so we are trying to anticipate a bit of the work we will have at the start of the season."
