Franz Tost The latest Formula 1 news about Franz Tost

Franz Tost has led the Faenza-based Visa Cash App RB (previously AlphaTauri), team since it took over the Minardi operation in 2008. Heading the Red Bull junior team, Tost has played a pivotal part in the careers of drivers such as Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly.

Tost in Motorsport

While Franz Tost started his motorsports career as a racing driver, winning the Austrian Formula Ford championship, he made the astute decision to pursue a degree in Sports Management from Innsbruck University and found himself managing the Walter Lechner Racing School at the Zeltweg circuit.

His big break came when he began managing Wili Webber’s Formula 3 team. There the Austrian would meet a young Ralf Schumacher and. on the behest of Webber, Tost would follow the German first to Japan and ultimately to Formula 1.

Former AlphaTauri Team Principal

From managing the affairs of Schumacher, Tost would then move into an Operations Manager role with BMW. His success while at BMW didn’t go unnoticed and in 2005, Tost would be named as Team Principal for the newly formed Toro Rosso team, a position he would hold on to for 15 years.

In 2020 Toro Rosso changed its name to AlphaTauri. Tost will have been AlphaTauri's team boss for 18 years in November 2023.

Departure from AlphaTauri

News broke in April 2023 that Tost would complete his final season as AlphaTauri's Team Principal. He will be replaced by Frenchman Laurent Mekies. However, Tost will still be involved with Visa Cash App RB (formerly AlphaTauri) as a consultant in 2024.

AlphaTauri F1 Victories

AlphaTauri/Toro Rosso has taken two victories, one in 2008 in Monza courtesy of Sebastian Vettel, which was also the first for Vettel himself. The second victory was secured by Pierre Gasly in 2020, also at the Italian Grand Prix.

Formula 1 Talents

Tost has had many talented up-and-coming drivers in his career, with names such as Vettel, Max Verstappen, Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz starting their careers with the Italian Scuderia.

2023 Season

AlphaTauri endured an up-and-down season in 2023.

Nyck de Vries joined Yuki Tsunoda at the team but, having failed to score in any of the first 10 races, was dropped in favour of Ricciardo, who had been out of a drive since leaving McLaren at the end of 2022.

The Australian had only returned for two races before breaking a bone in his left hand, leaving rookie Liam Lawson to take part in five races as a substitute.

After a slow start to the season, Tsunoda, Lawson and Ricciardo helped to boost AlphaTauri's position in the standings.
