Logan Sargeant debuts in Formula 1 in 2023 with Williams, having been a member of their driver academy since 2021.

He marks the first American to secure a full-time race seat since Scott Speed in 2006, who competed for Toro Rosso, and the initial American presence on the grid since Alexander Rossi in 2015.

Sargeant's early career

Born in Fort Lauderdale in 2000, Sargeant initiated his career in karting in 2008, participating in regional and national championships in the US.

In 2015, Sargeant secured victory in the Karting World Championship, the FIA's premier karting contest, becoming the first American to achieve this feat since Lake Speed in 1978.

Subsequently, he transitioned to junior Formula championships, debuting in the Formula 4 UAE Championship before transitioning to British F4 with Carlin. Paired with fellow rookie Oscar Piastri, he clinched third place in the championship.

In 2018, he made a full-time transition to Formula Renault Eurocup, capturing three wins and concluding the championship in fourth place.

Stepping up to Formula 3

Sargeant reunited with Carlin in 2019 for his debut in the Formula 3, a support series for F1. He secured points in four races, finishing 19th in the championship alongside future F2 champion Felipe Drugovich, who claimed the 16th spot.

In 2020, he joined the successful Prema team, once again partnering with Piastri. Sargeant clinched his first victory in the second feature race at the Silverstone round and added a sprint race win in Belgium. Despite his two wins and four podiums, Sargeant found himself in championship contention heading into the final weekend. However, he could only gather eight points, finishing third in the standings, just four points behind eventual champion Piastri.

Initially citing financial reasons, Sargeant had announced that he wouldn't participate in the 2021 season. However, he later conducted pre-season testing for Charouz, earning a drive for the entire season. He achieved three podiums and secured a race win in the Sprint race in Russia late in the season, concluding the year in seventh place with a total of 102 points.

Making his mark in Formula 2

Sargeant made his debut in Formula 2 at the penultimate round in 2021 at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit with HWA Racelab. He finished his first race in P16, but had to retire in the second race due to a technical issue.

During this period he also went on to be signed up as a Williams Development Driver, and got his first taste of F1 machinery at the post-season test in Abu Dhabi. He described his first time as an "experience of a lifetime."

In 2022 he made the switch to Carlin alongside Liam Lawson. During the feature race at the Silverstone round he became the first American driver to win a Formula 2 race.

He inherited victory in F2 later in the year at the Austrian round, when both Richard Verschoor and Jehan Daruvala were handed penalties post-race.

Despite finishing fourth in the championship, Sargeant was handed the rookie of the year award at the end of the season.

Sargeant makes first full-season debut

Sargeant initially did not have enough super licence points to make a full-time race debut in 2022, so Williams gave him extra FP1 outings.

His first FP1 outing was at his home race in Austin, where he described it as "different than expected" compared to racing in F2. He later did outings at the Mexican, Brazilian and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix, eventually obtaining enough points to be granted a superlicence.

Sargeant was later confirmed to be driving alongside Alex Albon in the 2023 season, participating in the post-season test with Williams with the race number 2 on the car.

After a spectacular race in Austin, the American managed to secure his first point in Formula 1. He finished twelfth in the United States Grand Prix. However, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were disqualified due to excessively worn 'skid blocks.' As a result, the American moved up to the tenth position, earning his first point in his home race.

This was the only point Sargeant scored in the 2023 season. Thanks to his teammate Alexander Albon's 27 points, the team finished seventh in the Constructors' Championship.
