Formula E is set to officially launch its Gen4 car in just over a week, with details of the event now revealed.
The all-electric series is currently approaching the midpoint of its final campaign using the Gen3 car, before Gen4 takes centre stage from next season.
Based on current rumours and expectations, the first race of the Gen4 era will take place in December.
Formula E released the first digital renders and video clips of the Gen4 car last November, following pre-season testing in Valencia.
Significant testing of the Gen4 car has been conducted by the FIA and Spark Racing Technology, using former F1 test driver James Rossiter, who also had a spell as Maserati team principal in Formula E.
Manufacturer tests have also taken place, the first of which occurred last November. Across the paddock, manufacturers are busy preparing for the arrival of Gen4.
On April 21 and 22 at the Circuit Paul Ricard, a select group of media will have the chance to see the car in person, where it will be officially unveiled.
The launch event is strictly closed to the general public, as well as any media without an invitation. RacingNews365 will be in attendance.
At a time when F1’s new power unit regulations are receiving significant criticism—particularly the electrical element of the engine—Formula E is set to showcase what can be achieved with the technology.
The Gen4 car can produce 600 kW (815+ bhp) of power across a hot lap, while it will produce 450 kW (600+ bhp) in race mode.
It features permanent four-wheel drive and two downforce settings, with lap times expected to improve to such an extent that it will likely sit between Formula 2 and F1.
Bridgestone is replacing Hankook as Formula E’s tyre supplier, marking the Japanese manufacturer’s return to an FIA single-seater series after leaving F1 at the end of 2010.
The Gen4 car is bigger and heavier than the current Gen3 Evo, due to a larger battery, but it is capable of exceeding 200 mph.
For Formula E, it is a car that could transform the championship and bring it closer to F1 than ever before. Before long, it might even surpass it.
