Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds has hailed the reveal of the championship's new car – the Gen4. It is the series' "most advanced" car in its history, and one which will take a huge step towards Formula 1.
The new Formula E car will make its competitive debut at the end of 2026 for what will be Season 13, while the upcoming campaign which starts this December will be the last of the current Gen3 era.
Formula E's Wednesday afternoon reveal of the Gen4 falls just a matter of days before Porsche, Jaguar, Nissan, Stellantis and Lola will begin private testing in Monteblanco, Spain.
To-date, they are the five manufacturers signed up to the next era of Formula E, with Mahindra still to make a decision. While it will represent the manufacturers first real experience testing the Gen4, the FIA has conducted 8,000km worth of running with a mule car.
Former F1 test driver James Rossiter has been working with the FIA to carry out the testing, in the car which produces 600 kW of power – equivalent to 815 bhp.
Over 200 mph (321 km/h) has been recorded, although 210 mph (338 km/h) has been reported in the paddock.
It features permanent all-wheel drive and new tyres, designed by Bridgestone who are returning to single-seater racing for the first time since leaving F1 at the end of 2009.
Formula E's acceleration from 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) will remain at around 1.8s, potentially even quicker. This figure is 30% faster than what an F1 car is capable of.
As a result of the performance improvement compared to the current Gen3 Evo, the Gen4 is expected to be several seconds quicker and faster than a current Formula 2 car.
It means just a few seconds will split F1 and Formula E, in what is a staggering jump for the all-electric series.
For Dodds, this is the first complete generation change he has overseen, although he was CEO when the modified version of the original Gen3 car was introduced.
"The GEN4 is far more than a race car," said Dodds. "It represents over a decade of progress, innovation, and ambition in electric racing.
"Co-developed with the FIA, it stands as the most advanced, demanding, and sustainable machine we’ve ever built, redefining what’s possible in performance and environmental responsibility.
"With GEN4, Formula E strengthens its position as the world’s most forward-thinking sport and a true racing pioneer."
