Former F1 driver hints at shock outcome if ‘biggest surprise’ of 2025 fails

Williams has one of the strongest driver pairings on the grid this year, but with that comes additional pressure for both Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz to perform.

Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya believes Williams will be the "biggest surprise" of the year, but has dealt a warning to both Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz.

Williams endured a poor 2024 which saw the Grove-based team fall to ninth in the constructors' standings.

Its campaign was marred by a mid-season driver change after Franco Colapinto was promoted from F2 to replace Logan Sargeant.

Whilst Colapinto initially performed well, he struggled in the latter stages of last year, costing Williams significant repair bills from multiple heavy crashes.

Despite a tough season, the historic outfit heads into the upcoming campaign with Sainz alongside Albon, forming one of the most talented driver pairings on the grid.

On paper, this should deliver results, although it will largely depend on the car Williams designs for the duo.

Montoya forecasts a strong year for his former team, unlike Aston Martin, who the Colombian suspects will focus on the new power unit regulations in 2026.

Following Sainz's arrival more eyes than usual will be on Williams, with Montoya warning both drivers that failing to perform could cost either their seat.

"I believe Aston Martin will put all their eggs in the 2026 basket," Montoya told CasinoApps.

"They'll make some steps for the 2025 season, but I think their main focus is 2026. Aston Martin needs to play the long game.

"I think Williams will be the biggest surprise of 2025, Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto did not end the season perfectly but with Carlos Sainz, they can perform better.

"It will be interesting to see if Williams can keep the performances up for both Albon and Sainz, or they may think of replacing one of those guys."
