FIA responds to F1 budget cap breach rumours

Reports have claimed up to three teams overspent in 2022

The FIA has reiterated the auditing process for the compliance of teams to the 2022 budget cap remains ongoing in response to reports of two or three teams breaching the limit. F1 teams were constrained to a $140 million cap last season, a reduction of $5 million from the first year of the financial regulations - albeit with a break introduced mid-season to combat soaring inflation. Red Bull was found in breach of 2021's budget cap, with murmurings of discontent surfacing at the Singapore Grand Prix last term. But reports of potential breaches have arrived early this season, with Italian media suggesting three teams have overspent whilst German media claims only two are in violation.

FIA response

In response to continued speculation, an FIA Spokesperson said: "We’d like to reiterate the ongoing process preceding financial regulation certification for the teams - none of which have been informed of their certification status. "The auditing fieldwork is still ongoing and is scheduled to conclude in the upcoming weeks, after which there will be a period required for the finalisation of the review. "There is not, and has never been, a specific deadline for certification, and any suggestions of delays to this process or potential breaches are completely unfounded – the Cost Cap Administration will formally communicate its findings according to the procedure set out in the Financial Regulations. "The timeframe is intentionally not fixed in order not to prejudice the robustness and the effectiveness of the review."
