FIA receive plea from F1 driver: We would like to be listened to

Kevin Magnussen believes there should be more communication between F1 drivers and the FIA – not involving the outside world – to improve stewarding.

Haas driver Kevin Magnussen has joined a growing list of competitors in voicing his opinion on the inconsistency of stewarding during race weekends. It comes after several drivers were given time penalties for exceeding track limits too often during the Austrian Grand Prix. At the prior Grand Prix weekend in Silverstone, this was not an issue despite drivers going off track in a similar manner. During qualifying at the recent Hungarian Grand Prix, Sergio Perez became the first driver to have a lap reinstated after the stewards deleted it but later determined that he didn't exceed the limits set out by the FIA at Turn 5. Magnussen believes the FIA need to provide clarity from the stewards on what they can and can't do out on track. "I think it's best that the drivers and the FIA work together and try not to talk to everyone else about what's going on," said Magnussen to media including RacingNews365.com . "There's clearly stuff that can be improved and we would all like to have more consistent stewarding so that we know what we can do and what we can't."

Magnussen: Involving the outside world makes the situation worse

A solution to improve the consistency of the stewarding could be in communication with drivers behind closed doors, believes Magnussen. "I would like to speak to the FIA about that with the drivers, and keep the communication between those two parties not involving everyone else, because it's not so obvious what needs to be done," said the Dane. "I think the FIA should really try and listen to the drivers because we have experience – there's 20 drivers with a lot of experience. We would like to be listened to." He added: "We're talking [about] lots of things. I would like to not talk to you guys [the media] about those things, because it puts pressure on everyone and just makes the situation worse."
