FIA considers handing out it's first lifetime ban

The FIA is seriously pursuing the possibility of handing Italian kart driver Luca Corberi a life time ban.

An incident from the 2020 FIA Karting World Championship, where Italian driver Luca Corberi first threw his front bumper onto the circuit while the race was still going on and then actively assaulted a fellow competitor at the venue's parc ferme could be handed a lifetime ban. A lifetime ban has so been unprecedented in motorsport, though Corberi's actions go above and beyond those of most other infractions. During the course of a tribunal hearing, the FIA said that a lifetime was under consideration due to the nature of the violation. The event's race director Pasquale Lupoli was one of the key witnesses during the proceedings stating he had never seen anything like it before. Representatives of Corberi argued that his actions were fueled by adrenaline which equated to "motive" rather than "premeditation". While the FIA accepted that the first incident, where Corberi threw his bumper on the circuit might constitute motive, his actions in parc ferme were definitely a result of premeditation. Several prominent members from the motorsport community have called for a lifetime ban including Jenson Button who Tweeted about the incident last year.

Luca Corberi has just destroyed any chance he had at a racing career after his disgusting behaviour today at the FIA Karting World champs. His father owns the circuit and is seen power driving the guy into a wall, Life ban for both of these idiots please https://t.co/uzWD1cDJ9w — Jenson Button (@JensonButton) October 4, 2020

Despite Corberi's representatives using Michael Schumacher's incident with David Coulthard as an example of an altercation leading to much softer punishment, it appears as if Corberi will become the first driver in history to get a lifetime ban. A decision is expected to be made in the next two to three weeks. Both incidents can be viewed below.
