FIA changes Imola DRS zone to aid overtaking

Last year’s return to the F1 calendar for Imola provided few opportunities for wheel-to-wheel action or overtaking. Now circuit officials have lengthened the DRS zone to help aid the racing.

The FIA have extended the length of Imola’s single DRS zone ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix this weekend. Imola hosted its first F1 race in 14 years last season which was won by Mercedes’ Sir Lewis Hamilton, and has been added to the calendar once again for 2021. The circuit was amended ahead of last year’s Grand Prix to eliminate the Variante Bassa chicane which created a flat-out section from the exit of Turn 18 down to the Turn 2 Tamburello chicane. This section of the track provides Imola’s sole DRS zone, and the window has now been moved forward a further 150m to 200m ahead of the start-finish line which provided the activation point in last year’s race.
