Ferrari warned 'you can't have everything' over key weakness

British racing driver Jamie Chadwick has warned Ferrari that it "can't have everything", with the Scuderia struggling for straight-line speed.

Ferrari has struggled to match the top speed of Red Bull and Mercedes throughout the season, although it has looked excellent through the corners.

It has been speculated that, despite being down on top speed, Ferrari has the best chassis on the grid, allowing it to make up significant time in the corners.

Lewis Hamilton used this to his advantage to secure a strong second-place finish in the Canadian Grand Prix — his best result since joining the Maranello-based outfit.

However, both the seven-time world champion and Charles Leclerc have highlighted the need for Ferrari's engine to be more powerful, with the hope being that it will benefit from the first round of ADUO (Additional Development Upgrade Opportunities).

While Chadwick does not doubt that Ferrari needs more power, it has also been suggested that the Italian squad prioritised a strong chassis over outright engine performance for a reason.

Discussing Hamilton extracting the most out of the SF-26 in Montreal, Chadwick told Sky F1: "He did, but you can't have everything. 

"They've gone down that route for a reason, and we've seen the benefits of that sort of philosophy with the car — with the fast starts and the strong first laps. I think they also benefit in a lot of corner exits and situations like that from this small turbo.

"Their chassis does look good, but it feels like you can't have everything all at once, because if you do, then you're going to be dominating. So, I think they've committed to that philosophy. 

"It'll be interesting to see how things might change with any regulation changes, particularly regarding Mercedes, compression ratios, and everything we've spoken about before."
