A technical trick pioneered by Ferrari is to be banned from F1 ahead of the 2027 season.
During pre-season testing, the Scuderia delivered an exhaust wing, mounted above the tailpipe in a bid to increase rear downforce, through increasing the length of the diffuser and also creating smoother airflow to the rear of the car.
At the time, RacingNews365's technical analyst Paolo Filisetti wrote that the upgrade would be almost impossible for rival teams to copy, as it would require costly redesigns of the rear crash structure.
Others, such as Mercedes, Red Bull, and McLaren, have adopted similar designs, but for 2027, the loophole is to be firmly closed and prohibited.
The design was fully legal and did not breach the regulations in any way, but it is understood that the FIA was keen to avoid a potential development war in the area, and so has moved to close off development opportunities in this crucial area for performance.
Following talks between senior figures, a so-called 'exclusion zone' has been put into place for next season, meaning the exhaust wings will be banned.
Ferrari's Dino Beganovic was seen to be testing the SF-26 without the design during his FP1 outing at the Austrian GP, in place of Charles Leclerc.
