Fernando Alonso has backed Max Verstappen to enjoy a racing career in sports cars after he opts to walk away from F1.

Verstappen recently took part in a test outing at the famous Nordschleife circuit in a Ferrari GT3 car under the name 'Franz Hermann'.

The Dutchman has long voiced his interest in endurance racing and confirmed he is aiming to take part in the Nurburgring 24 Hours race in the future.

Alonso drew on his experience outside F1 when he was asked if he is keen to do something similar when he retires from the series.

“I did, in a way, my life out of F1 when I was tired of being here and being just a secondary actor,” Alonso told media including RacingNews365

“I was not really a protagonist in 2016, 2017, and 2018.

“I wanted to try something different outside F1, and I had great experiences in other categories.”

Fernando Alonso 'will watch' next Max Verstappen chapter

Alonso became a two-time Le Mans winner and a WEC champion with Toyota and also had a second stab at the Indianapolis 500 in 2019 - however he failed to qualify for the race on that occasion.

While the Spaniard is continuing to race in F1 as he approaches his mid-40s, Verstappen is adamant his career in the series will be over long before that point.

Alonso has backed Verstappen to enjoy his time racing away from the scrutiny that comes with F1.

“You get the fun of driving without the rest of everything that Formula 1 has, and I'm sure he had a great time there,” Alonso said.

“For me, it's not the priority at the moment, but I cannot say what I will do in the future. The endurance racing, 24-hour races, are always fun.

“You share the car with other drivers, there is a lot of team spirit on it, and team building in the way you go to racing, and yes, it’s great fun.

“I hope he enjoys it and does something maybe after Formula 1 because he's also a racer and he prefers to be driving than doing anything else, as we can see in the simulator sessions that he does.

“I’m sure he will do some other series and we will watch.”
