Fernando Alonso has insisted that his participation in the 2027 F1 campaign will not depend on Aston Martin's highly anticipated upgrade set to debut this weekend.
Aston Martin has endured a painful season thus far, languishing towards the rear of the field with a car that has not been drip-fed upgrades like rival squads.
Instead, it has opted to bring a substantial upgrade in one go, which will break cover at the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend.
It comes at a time when Alonso is mulling over his future, having long declared that he will make a call over the upcoming summer break.
When asked how important the performance of the upgrades will be for his decision, Alonso told media including RacingNews365: “Nothing.
“Nothing because my decision is not about the performance of this year. This year we started on the wrong foot.
“I cannot base my decision for next year on a performance that is not realistic.
“This is not the true potential of the team. It's much higher than what we see.”
Alonso has outlined that his decision will be based on the future of the regulations, having raised concerns over the enjoyment of driving the new cars.
The FIA has already confirmed that there will be a tweak to the rules next year, with a move away from the 50/50 split between the combustion engine and the battery and an increase in output for the former element.
“My decision for next year is more about the rules,” Alonso added.
“Driving these cars in places like Spa or Silverstone last race is not what I'm dreaming of for my future. So we'll see.”
