F1 teammate crashes and clashes

While it is one of the worst nightmares of any team principal, there have been plenty of crashes between Formula 1 teammates over the years.

It's never great to have a crash with anyone in F1- and even worse when it's your teammate. While drivers try as much as possible to avoid one another, and team principals pray that it never happens, there have been multiple occasions were rivalries and competition on track have crossed the line and led to teammates taking one another out. Here RacingNews365.com looks at some of the biggest crashes and clashes between F1 teammates over the years.

Prost vs Senna, 1989

The Prost/ Senna rivalry at McLaren during the late 1980s looms large over F1 history as one of the most intense competitions between two teammates. During the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix, the two legendary drivers battled it out for the world championship, with Prost holding a slender lead in the title race. During the race, the Frenchman started at the front with Senna following close behind, but when the latter spotted a gap coming into the last chicane, the door was promptly closed by Prost, resulting in a crash which took the leader out of the race. While Senna was able to continue driving after receiving some help from the marshals, and eventually won the race, he was disqualified for cutting the chicane and Prost was named world champion.

Montoya vs Raikkonen, 2006

In another McLaren head to head, Juan Pablo Montoya and Kimi Raikkonen clashed in the 2006 United States Grand Prix as the Colombian nudged his teammate shortly after the start of the race, triggering a chain reaction which took eight drivers with it. The race would prove to be Montoya’s last in F1 before switching to IndyCar.

Vettel vs Webber, 2010

Back in 2010, Red Bull were dominating the F1 world championship, but that didn’t mean all was well in the paddock. In the Turkish Grand Prix last year, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber clashed, with the Australian driver ultimately forced out of the race.

Hamilton vs Rosberg, 2016

A rivalry that still looms large over Mercedes- and one that is set to be reignited as the two drivers make the switch to team owners in Extreme E- Sir Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg clashed at the Spanish Grand Prix in 2016, taking both drivers into the gravel and eventually handing a first race win to a young Max Verstappen.

Vettel vs Raikkonen, 2017

The 2017 Singapore Grand Prix lasted all of 200 metres for some drivers after the Ferraris of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen came together, taking Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso with them out of the race.

Verstappen vs Ricciardo, 2018

After some fantastic battling which must have left Christian Horner biting his nails to the bone, Red Bull drivers Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo crashed into each other at the 2018 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, confirming the team manager’s worst nightmares.

Ocon vs Perez, 2018

The infighting at Racing Point during the 2018 season got so bad that the team eventually had to ban Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon from racing each other, with clashes at Baku, Spa and Singapore.

Vettel vs Leclerc, 2019

Vettel found the car of his teammate yet again in the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2019, crashing into Charles Leclerc and turning the race on its head.
