F1's commercial rights holders Liberty Media has completed its takeover of MotoGP following approval from the European Commission.

Liberty originally proposed its takeover of Dorna Sports in April 2024, however the bid was subject to an investigation amid concerns it may break anti-trust and competitive laws.

But following a period of analysis, the Commission has opted to approve the bid which is now expected to close no later than July 3, 2025.

Liberty Media now takes hold of the commercial rights of the premier motorcycle racing category and is tasked with boosting the MotoGP fanbase and growing the sport worldwide.

Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna since 1998, will continue to run MotoGP along with his management team.

“We are very happy that the European Commission has approved the transaction,” Ezpeleta said.

“This is an important milestone confirming the even brighter future that lies ahead for MotoGP.

“MotoGP is one of the most thrilling sports on Earth, and we look forward to accelerating the sport’s growth and expanding its reach to even more fans around the world.

“Liberty is the best possible partner for our sport and the entire MotoGP community, and we are excited to create even greater value for our fans, commercial partners and everyone competing.”

The deal is set to see Liberty Media acquire 84% of MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports with MotoGP management retaining 16% of the business.
