F1 fans torn as Max Verstappen and Lando Norris identified as title favourites

The 2025 F1 season promises to be one of the most open and unpredictable campaigns in recent memory with four teams separated by seemingly paper-thin margins.

In extension of that, there is a general feeling that the drivers' title could go to one of a handful of drivers; with McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, the Ferrari pair of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton and reigning champion Max Verstappen, who is still a considerable threat despite Red Bull no longer enjoying the strongest package.

The there is the outside bet of George Russell, tasked with leading Mercedes for the first time. In short: it is anyone's guess as to how it will all shake out come the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December.

Last year, it came down to Verstappen and Norris - although the British driver never got within striking distance of the now-four-time F1 drivers' champion.

McLaren overthrew Red Bull in the constructors' standings (with Ferrari sneaking in between), so it is perhaps not surprising last year's major title protagonists head into the campaign as the favourites.

In a recent poll conducted by RacingNews365 Verstappen just pipped Norris in the championship winner predictions as the pair amassed close to 60 percent of the vote.

Hamilton fared more favourably than his new team-mate and interestingly, the same percentage of respondents believe the champion will be either Russell, Kimi Antonelli or Liam Lawson as those who think the crown will go to a driver from outside the top four teams - as unlikely as that might seem at the moment.
