Lando Norris has been advised by 2009 F1 world champion Jenson Button to "realise" that everyone makes mistakes, and to stop being his "own worst enemy".

The McLaren driver has placed himself firmly in contention for a maiden drivers' title, following back-to-back victories in Austria and Silverstone.

Norris has bounced back perfectly from the Canadian Grand Prix, where he crashed into the back of team-mate Oscar Piastri whilst fighting for fourth.

Ahead of this weekend's trip to Spa-Francorchamps, Norris finds himself eight points adrift of Piastri and with significant momentum behind him.

For much of the campaign, the 25-year-old has been publicly self-critical after every mistake, something for which he has faced criticism.

However, since crashing into Piastri, Norris has been significantly more positive, with Button additionally reminding him that mistakes are part of life.

"Austria was a really important weekend for Lando," Button told F1. "I think if it went on any longer without Lando winning, mentally it’s very tough for a driver.

"Especially someone like Lando, who I think can be his own worst enemy at times – he puts a lot of pressure on himself. He’s unbelievably quick, but if he makes a tiny mistake, he really takes it to heart.

"He’s got to realise that we all make mistakes. It happens, it’s part of racing, and more often than not, you lose rather than win. I love his personality, and I really think he’s super-quick.

"Oscar’s a very different personality, very level-headed. Nothing seems to faze him, and that makes him a very, very difficult competitor…"
