F1 announces major step towards critical goal

F1 has a critical target of being Net Zero by 2030, a milestone it is continuing to make progress towards.

Formula 1 remains firmly on track to meet its Net Zero by 2030 commitment, having recorded a 35% reduction in its carbon footprint against its 2018 baseline.

The sport has cut almost 80,000 tCO2e from its operations since then, the equivalent of more than 100,000 one-way transatlantic flights between London and New York.

Year-on-year, the figures are equally encouraging, with F1 delivering a 12% reduction in emissions compared to 2024.

"At Formula 1, we act and show our achievements through facts, not just words, and I am incredibly proud that we remain on track to achieve net zero by 2030, made possible by the collective effort across the sport to reduce our environmental impact," said F1 president and CEO, Stefano Domenicali.

"From calendar rationalisation to greater investment in sustainable fuels and alternative energy solutions, we have reduced our footprint while the sport continues to grow and reach new audiences around the world.

"I would like to thank the FIA, all the F1 teams, our broadcasters, partners, promoters, and of course our team, for their shared commitment and for continuing to drive this forward together."

How has F1 achieved this?

The savings have been spread across several areas of the sport's operations. Factories and facilities account for the largest share, with a 64% reduction against 2018 driven by the widespread adoption of renewable energy sources across team factories and office sites.

Travel emissions are down 27% since 2018, supported by a doubling of investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) year-on-year, which alone delivered a reduction of over 20,000 tCO2e and an approximate 40% cut in air charter emissions.

Logistics emissions have fallen 29% against the 2018 baseline, with Formula 1 now operating lower-carbon solutions across all three freight modes, land, air and sea, for the first time.

Event operations have seen a 17% reduction on a per-race basis, a notable achievement given the calendar has grown from 21 races in 2018 to 24 in 2025.

All European grands prix in 2025 were powered by alternative energy solutions including HVO, solar and battery systems.

Looking ahead, Formula 1 plans to shift more than 50% of its broadcast and related freight away from air transport entirely by 2030.

"Sustainability underpins every decision we make, not only on the racetrack, but in how we produce and deliver our iconic events around the world," said Ellen Jones, F1's head of ESG.

"By doubling the sport’s investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), making our first investment in sustainable maritime fuel, and continuing to work closely with promoters, teams and partners, we are driving further emissions reductions while accelerating the adoption of the latest technologies.

"These actions demonstrate our continued determination to lead through sustainable innovation. As we move towards our net zero by 2030 goal, the Future Race Operations Programme will deliver further significant reductions in the years ahead, alongside the full impact of calendar rationalisation, which will come into effect from the 2026 season.

"Together, these initiatives show that sustainable operations are not only possible at a global scale, but can be delivered without compromising the performance, ambition or spectacle that define Formula 1."
