Valtteri Bottas topped the time sheets in the First Practice session for the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix - in an effective abandoned session.

Just minutes into the planned 60-minute session, red flags were thrown to recover Pierre Gasly's Alpine which had suffered an apparent driveshaft failure on his first lap out of the pits.

As the session was set to resume, the expected restart did not occur as a CCTV failure prompted the FIA to keep the session suspended due to safety concerns.

There are talks to add on an extra 30 minutes to the second free practice session later on Friday.

In the handful of laps that were complete, Bottas put in the fastest time ahead of Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso for Aston Martin as only 12 drivers put laps on the board.
