The McLaren's impressed with fourth and fifth as Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo enjoyed a strong start to their weekend.
Sergio Perez was only seventh, as Max Verstappen had an early bath after a transmission issue early in the session.
The home favourite ended FP1 in 19th place, ahead of only Nicholas Latifi.
