The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix will be held on April 18, 2021. For the second consecutive year the race in Imola will return on the Formula 1 calendar, after it had been held for the last time in 2006.

Built in March 1950, racing began at Imola three years later, but it wasn’t until 1963 that it would first host a Formula 1 race, albeit a non-championship one. That honour would have to wait another 17 years when the track was awarded the 1980 Italian Grand Prix. Such was the success of the event that Imola was retained as a venue, hosting the San Marino Grand Prix from 1981 to 2006.

The layout, which has undergone major revisions over the years, now measures 4.909km and features a number of fast, sweeping corners that make it a thrill for drivers. However, given the narrow nature of the anti-clockwise circuit, overtaking tends to be limited to the long straight coming out of the last corner.

Nelson Piquet won the first official Formula 1 race at Imola, and Lewis Hamilton the most recent. However, the track is most famous for the 1994 San Marino GP that claimed the lives of Roland Ratzenberger during Saturday qualifying, and then Ayrton Senna on lap 7 of the race. A truly unforgettable day in the history of F1.

The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix 2020
Despite being the first grand prix to bear the Emilia Romagna name, the eventual outcome was all too familiar as Hamilton led Valterri Bottas over the line for a Mercedes one-two.

From pole, Bottas retained his lead at the start while Max Verstappen jumped Hamilton into second. However, an early incident would wreak havoc as the Finn drove over a piece of Sebastian Vettel’s front wing after the German clashed with Kevin Magnussen. The loss of downforce meant Bottas was powerless to stop what was to come. Mercedes pitted car number 77 at the end of lap 19 to cover off Verstappen, allowing teammate Hamilton to pursue an alternative strategy. The Brit extended his stint an extra 11 laps and was able to pit under the virtual safety car brought out by Esteban Ocon’s stricken Renault. He re-joined comfortably in the lead and never looked back.

Behind, Verstappen finally overtook Bottas for second before the Dutchman’s race came to a sudden halt when his front-left tyre failed. That allowed Daniel Ricciardo to claim third for the second time in three races for Renault.

When is the 2021 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on the F1 calendar?
The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix is scheduled to take place on the weekend of April 16-18 and is provisionally set to be the second race of the Formula 1 season. The first two free practice sessions will take place on April 16, with qualifying on Saturday, April 17 at 15:00 CET.
