Da Costa takes Diriyah E-Prix podium after Vergne penalty

DS Techeetah took home third place at Saturday's second Diriyah E-Prix, however it isn't Jean-Eric Vergne after the Frenchman was handed a penalty after the race.

Jean-Eric Vergne has had his Diriyah E-Prix podium stripped from him with DS Techeetah teammate Antonio Felix da Costa promoted to third. The two battled it out on the track in Saudi Arabia in the second race of the season, with Da Costa using some aggressive tactics while trying to keep the Frenchman behind him. In the end Vergne crossed the line third in what he thought was his first podium finish of the season. However he has since been stripped of that result as he did not activate his second attack mode due to a late safety car and red flag. As a result he's been handed a 24-second time penalty which means he ends the event 12th, a full 29 seconds behind race winner Sam Bird. Envision Virgin Racing driver Nick Cassidy has also been stripped of his fifth place finish for speeding while the race was neutralised, meaning Dragon Penske Autosport duo Sergio Sette Camara and Nico Muller have been promoted to fourth and fifth respectively. NiIO 333 driver Tom Blomqvist and Audi driver Rene Rast were adjudged to have committed the same offence as Vergne, while also being handed additional penalties for exceeding the speed limit during the full-course yellow.
