Christian Horner reveals he would break F1 return vow for Ferrari

Christian Horner has conceded he would set aside his long-held condition of only returning to Formula 1 as a team owner if Ferrari came calling.

Horner has singled out the Scuderia as the one exception to a rule he has repeated since his exit from Red Bull in July last year after 20 years at the helm.

Since then, Horner has repeatedly said he has no interest in being a "hired hand" again, insisting he would only take another team principal role if it came with an ownership stake. But he has now made clear that Ferrari is the outfit that would change his mind.

Speaking about the prospect to The Times, Horner said: "I've been a hired hand. I did 21 years sitting on the pit wall. I don't need to go back to that.

"At this stage in my life, there's only one team for which I would accept non-participation in ownership."

As to the team, in particular, he added: "Would I consider Ferrari? I mean, Ferrari is the biggest brand in Formula 1. It's the dream. And arguably it's the sleeping giant of Formula 1."

Horner would love to ruffle Wolff 'hair'

Fred Vasseur remains under contract as Ferrari team principal following a multi-year extension signed in July 2025. The deal is understood to run until at least the end of 2027.

Following the major regulations change introduced for this year, Ferrari has failed to mount a title challenge, despite boasting a driver line-up of seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

Although Vasseur has long had the support of both Hamilton and Leclerc, there have been reports of friction behind the scenes.

Horner has been linked with Ferrari, as well as Aston Martin and Alpine, whilst a role inside Cadillac has also been mooted

Horner has made clear he is not short of alternatives to sitting idle, framing any return purely in terms of competitiveness rather than need.

"There comes a point in time where a team's competitiveness outweighs other egotistical stuff," he said. "I'm in a very fortunate position that I can afford to be picky.

"If I don't do anything, I can live here [referring to his Oxfordshire home] for whatever time I've got left on the planet, and just worry about whether it's going to rain and make the grass green or not.

"But is that going to fulfil me? No. I still feel that there's another dance."

Concluding with a dig at his former nemesis Toto Wolff, he said: "And Toto needs to have his hair f***ing ruffled up."
