Christian Horner clarifies Ferrari 'dream job' remark as F1 return wait continues

Those comments made headlines, and now the former Red Bull boss has moved to clear the air.

Christian Horner has moved to clarify his recent remarks about Ferrari.

Horner has insisted that a comment describing the Maranello outfit as a "dream job" was taken out of context and that any return to Formula 1 would hinge on securing an ownership stake rather than a straightforward hiring.

The former Red Bull boss left the Milton Keynes-based team in 2025 under a formal severance agreement reported to be worth around £80 million, concluding a contract that had been scheduled to run through 2030.

Terms of that exit are understood to have reduced his overall payout in exchange for a shorter non-compete period, clearing the way for Horner to explore F1 opportunities again from early 2026.

Since then, Horner has been linked to investor consortia rather than conventional team principal vacancies, including a confirmed approach as part of a group exploring Otro Capital's 24 per cent minority stake in Alpine.

Ferrari, however, operates as an internal racing division of Ferrari N.V., not a separate sellable franchise, meaning no outside party can buy equity in the Scuderia alone.

Horner - Ferrary aren't going to sell shares

Speaking to The Guardian, Horner was careful to praise Fred Vasseur, who signed a multi-year contract extension with Ferrari in July 2025 and has since been publicly backed by senior Ferrari executives John Elkann and Benedetto Vigna amid paddock chatter over his long-term position.

"Fred Vasseur is an experienced guy," Horner said. "He's done a decent job. But I, more than anyone, know the pressures of running a competitive organisation. My comments got taken out of context.

"Ferrari is the biggest brand in F1. It's the most historic team. But I've accumulated some phenomenal capital behind me, to look at the next move I potentially make in the sport.

"That would be with ownership attached to it, and Ferrari aren't going to sell shares.

"So I'm happy to sit outside the sport and see what opportunities present themselves over the coming months or years.

"It's not a prerequisite that I go back. I would only return for the right opportunity with like-minded people that want to win. I would never go back just to take part."

Horner's comments confirm he is pursuing an equity-linked route back into the sport, having built financial backing that he has described as giving him leverage to wait for the right project rather than accept any available seat on the pit wall.
