Christian Horner has explained why Red Bull became 'selective' about the information which was discussed around "wrecking ball" Helmut Marko.
After Horner was appointed as Red Bull team principal in 2005, Marko was installed as 'advisor' for Red Bull GmbH - and effectively served as owner Dietrich Mateschitz's eyes and ears in the team and paddock.
Marko was never formally a member of Red Bull Racing, and cultivated a blunt, out-spoken character during his time with the team, which came to an end after he retired at the end of 2025 - months after Horner was sacked in July of that year, with Marko and Red Bull CEO of Corporate Projects Oliver Mintzlaff making the decision.
However, in his upcoming memoir Drive, Horner described Marko as a "complicated person" and revealed why the team started to withhold information from the Austrian during the formative years of the late 2000s, with Horner claiming that Marko would "claim credit" for the team's successes when reporting to Mateschitz, and "cast blame for the setbacks.
"From his position, Helmut treated insider information as currency, and he loved to spend it wildly, often without care," Horner wrote in his book, a copy of which has been read by RacingNews365.
"Helmut was becoming an increasingly unreliable ally. His media activities were equally frustrating because he happily shared insider information with platforms he favoured.
"This was a direct threat to our intellectual property, and a journalist only had to wave their microphone in front of Helmut for the floodgates to open, no matter how sensitive the material might have been.
"The team became exasperated, particularly Adrian [Newey] who grew more agitated with every leak.
"I raised the issue with Helmut many times and he always aruged his innocence and sometimes denied having spoken at all, even in those instances when he'd been quoted directly and on the record.
"Soon enough, we became very selective about the type of information that was discussed in his company."

Marko a "wrecking ball"
In mid-2008, David Coulthard was weighing up whether to retire from racing, as Red Bull had Sebastian Vettel waiting in the wings.
Coulthard eventually agreed with Horner to announce his retirement at the 2008 British GP, his home race, with Horner pressing Marko on the importance of letting Coulthard make the announcement and retire on his own terms.
However, a month before the Silverstone race, Horner recounts Coulthard telling him: "I think I've just been retired in a toilet," after Marko directly questioned him at a urinal, "because we're taking Vettel next year."
Horner recounts how he was "annoyed" and that "typically, Helmut had come in like a wrecking ball and crushed a delicate process."
