Charles Leclerc vented his anger at the new F1 regulations after another frustrating qualifying session in an explosive team radio message.
The Ferrari driver will start the Japanese Grand Prix fourth, but was disappointed with the outcome at Suzuka due to the complexities of energy management over one lap in F1 this season.
The peculiarities of the rules mean that when pushing to the maximum through corners, it compromises outright speed on straights.
This ultimately leads to slower lap times, with a more consistent approach within the limits of driver and car now advantageous.
It is counterintuitive and has been the catalyst for much of the criticism directed towards the new F1 era.
Leclerc expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation in China, and elaborated on the problem after qualifying in Japan — but not until he had let out some of his fury.
"I honestly cannot stand these rules in qualifying," the eight-time grand prix winner said over team radio. "It's a fucking joke!
"I go faster in corners, I go on the throttle earlier, for fuck's sake, I lose everything in the straight!"
