Carlos Sainz and Yuki Tsunoda were among the drivers who failed to advance out of the first segment of sprint qualifying in Brazil.
Tsunoda entered the session on the back of a difficult FP1 outing where he spun into the barrier, restricting him to 19 laps.
The Japanese driver, who is fighting for his future at Red Bull, could not muster up enough pace to escape the drop zone and ended hte session in 17th behind Franco Colapinto and Liam Lawson.
Carlos Sainz, who has endured a torrid run of results of late, could only manage the 20th fastest lap.
“This is the worst execution I have seen in my entire life,” he said after his elimination.
Joining the other four in the SQ1 drop zone was Esteban Ocon in 19th.
