In an interview with RacingNews365.com, Brawn said critics who believe Hamilton’s success is more to do with the car he is driving than how he drives need only to look at his win at the Turkish Grand Prix last year for evidence of why he is among the best to have competed in the sport.
Hamilton has won the title six times on the trot with Mercedes since the switch to turbo hybrid powertrains for the 2014 season, taking home 95 race wins in his career on the road to smashing the records previously held by Ferrari great Michael Schumacher.
However, the British driver’s success has attracted the attention of sceptics who believe that his victories have much more to do with the Mercedes engineering juggernaut and resourcing which has created a car consistently much faster than the rest of the field.
Despite this, Brawn thinks that Hamilton’s race win in Istanbul last year on a track which proved slippery even before it became clear that the race itself would be in wet conditions demonstrated why he has come out on top of the grid in the past few years.
"We had some very negative comments about the grip levels and the conditions (for the Turkish GP) and we had one of the greatest races of the year. And I think everybody took something away from that," he said.
"And it was interesting to me to see the more experienced drivers come to the fore there. And Lewis drove a brilliant race. I mean, if anyone questions, you know that he's got the best car, he oughta win, they also need to watch that race because that was a masterpiece."
Brawn: Masterpiece Turkish GP victory showed Hamilton brilliance
Formula 1 managing director Ross Brawn has weighed in on the perennial debate over whether Sir Lewis Hamilton’s record seven titles are down to the British driver’s singular ability or the machinery provided to him.
