Mattia Binotto believes that the Canadian Grand Prix is not a must-win for Ferrari, despite the team having only scored 42 points to Red Bull's 128 during the last three Grand Prix weekends. Ferrari are 71 points behind their closest World Championship rivals after eight rounds, with Mercedes now trailing the Scuderia by less than 40 points. Charles Leclerc has suffered two retirements in three races, while teammate Carlos Sainz has himself failed to finish on three occasions during the opening rounds. But Binotto, a week on from his claim that Ferrari are not targeting World Championship glory in 2022, says he is not looking at the growing points gap. When asked by RacingNews365.com in Baku if he was concerned by the deficit, Binotto said: "It's not something we are looking at, honestly. "We are focused on our results and focused on trying to get the most out of our race weekends, trying always to improve ourselves. "We know that to get to the top there is still a gap. I think we've proved that we had some problems in the last race and we are simply focused on trying to improve ourselves, race-by-race." The team boss added: "My only concern today is, what are we lacking?"
Binotto: Ferrari are focusing on themselves
It has been a disastrous three races for Ferrari, with Canada's Montreal track looking, on paper, to be another venue that will suit Red Bull on race day. Binotto is aware that the Scuderia have areas to improve on going forwards. "We had reliability issues [in Azerbaijan]," Binotto acknowledged. "Charles' start was not perfect, we had an issue with the pit-stops, we have different issues at the last events, so there is still much to progress. "I'm pretty sure that the others as well have problems or have not always made the right or best choices. But that's not what we care about, we only care and focus on ourselves."
Canada is not a must-win, says Binotto
Ferrari could be forgiven for viewing the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix as a must-win race, with Leclerc desperate for momentum heading into the busy European season. However, Binotto believes that the race in Montreal is still too early on in the calendar to be deemed so crucial. He said: "I don't think it is a must-win, at all. We will be focused race-by-race [and] try to optimise our potential."
