Bahrain GP in Malaysia: Every time F1 raced using a different country's name

F1 arrives at Sepang this week for a race that will not go anywhere near the country in its name. 

The Bahrain Grand Prix has been relocated to Malaysia, with the Sepang International Circuit hosting the Gulf Air-backed event after Bahrain International Circuit was ruled out following a postponement of the original April date and subsequent security concerns across the Middle East. 

Bahrain is understood to be helping fund the move, while retaining its national airline's title sponsorship.

It is far from the first time a grand prix name and its venue have gone their separate ways.

The 1982 Swiss Grand Prix

Switzerland has not hosted a round of the world championship on home soil since 1954, after the country banned circuit motor racing in the wake of the 1955 Le Mans disaster. 

That did not stop the calendar from carrying a Swiss Grand Prix in 1982, run instead at Dijon-Prenois in France. 

Keke Rosberg won from eighth on the grid for Williams, with Alain Prost's Renault second and Niki Lauda completing the podium for McLaren.

The 1981-2006 San Marino Grand Prix

For 26 years, the San Marino Grand Prix was one of the fixtures of the European season, and yet the race never came close to the tiny republic whose name it carried. 

FIA rules allowed each nation only one national grand prix, and Italy's was already spoken for by Monza. San Marino, in any case, had neither the terrain nor an FIA-standard circuit to host F1. 

The solution was to borrow the neighbouring enclave's identity for a race staged at Imola, just across the Italian border, which became a fixture of the calendar until its final running in 2006.

The 1997-1998 Luxembourg Grand Prix

The same logic produced the Luxembourg Grand Prix, held in 1997 and 1998 not in Luxembourg but at the Nurburgring in Germany. 

Hockenheim already held the contractual rights to the German Grand Prix, and regulations barred two races in the same country from sharing a national title, so organisers reached for Luxembourg instead, whose border sits roughly 80 kilometres from the Nürburgring. 

Jacques Villeneuve won the 1997 edition for Williams ahead of Jean Alesi's Benetton, while Mika Hakkinen took victory in 1998 from Michael Schumacher's Ferrari.

The many locations of the European Grand Prix

The European Grand Prix name went further still, appearing across six circuits in three different countries: Brands Hatch and Donington Park in Britain, the Nürburgring in Germany, Jerez and the Valencia street circuit in Spain, and Baku in Azerbaijan. 

The title was historically used as a way of squeezing a second race into a country's season without breaching the one-grand-prix-per-nation rule, and it also served as the promotional label for Baku's inaugural 2016 race before the event was renamed the Azerbaijan Grand Prix the following year.
