Azerbaijan GP Sprint crash risk leaves Krack 'nervous'

Could teams miss sessions in Baku given the constraints of F1's Sprint weekend format?

Aston Martin Team Principal Mike Krack has conceded he is "nervous" about the upcoming Sprint weekend at the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

F1's alternative format returns for the first of six instalments this season at the Baku City Circuit, marking the first time a Sprint has been held on a street circuit.

The tight and twisting layout will ramp up the pressure on drivers to maintain precision across a weekend that, if proposals to include a second qualifying session are passed, would see only one practice session held before critical sessions take place.

With teams fighting to remain within F1's budget cap whilst continuing development plans across the campaign, the prospect of two street races in two days has been a cause for concern.

Crash damage an immediate impact

But highlighting another issue that could arise, Krack told media, including RacingNews365.com: "I'm nervous about a Sprint in Baku because you don't have enough time to repair if you have major damage.

"Straight after the Sprint, you have the covers on and then in the morning, you have only three or four hours to repair your car if it's heavily damaged.

"So there is a high risk with that exercise. But again, it's the same for everybody and Baku is it is not so difficult to overtake [on].

"If you take high risk in the corners and then there is a higher risk, but I think I think it will be a good show over the weekend."
