Aston Martin complete critical 'damage limitation'

How important was this in the chase for second in F1's Constructors' standings?

Aston Martin Team Principal Mike Krack has insisted defeating Ferrari at the British Grand Prix was "damage limitation" on a weekend of struggles. The Silverstone-based outfit slumped behind Mercedes and McLaren at its home race to finish seventh with Fernando Alonso, whilst an eventful second half of the event left Lance Stroll scoreless. Whilst Red Bull has run away with the lead in F1's Constructors' standings, the race for runner-up is being played out between Aston Martin, Mercedes and Ferrari, with the pecking order being turned around from race to race. The Silver Arrows lead the way on 203 points, 22 ahead of Aston Martin and a further 24 points over the Scuderia.

No performance

Having struggled for performance at Silverstone, Krack told media, including RacingNews365 the "verdict is damage limitation". "I would say we did not have the performance that we wanted to have on Saturday or Sunday," he added. "To go away with scoring more points than Ferrari, you can call it damage limitation - I always said you cannot have podiums all the time. "We had six podiums in 10 races, I always said there will be also moments where it will be a bit more difficult and we had now a race where clearly on Saturday, we didn't have the pace that we wanted to have. “Going into the race, we said we need to rely on our strength, which is I think is pitstops, race starts, execution and strategy. "It played out quite well. All these we could rely on and this allowed us to come home still with decent points.”
