Aston Martin has announced that Adrian Newey will take control of the team principal position in 2026.

Newey will replace Andy Cowell, who will transition to the role of chief strategy officer.

The Briton joined the team in March earlier this year as its managing technical partner, placing his entire focus on the 2026 car being built under a fresh set of technical regulations.

Newey joined following a near-20-year stint with Red Bull where he won various championships with Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen.

Aston Martin has outlined that in his new team principal role, he will continue to guide the technical team, including the trackside operations of the car.

“Over the last nine months, I have seen great individual talent within our team,” Newey said.

“I’m looking forward to taking on this additional role as we put ourselves in the best possible position to compete in 2026, where we will face an entirely new position with Aston Martin now a works team combined with the considerable challenge faced by the new regulations.

“Andy’s new role, focusing on the integration of the new PU with our three key partners, will be pivotal in this journey.”

Cowell will report to team owner Lawrence Stroll in his new position and has been tasked with optimising the technical partnership between Aston Martin and its new power unit supplier Honda.

Prior to joining Aston Martin, Cowell played an important role in Mercedes' dominance of the early years of the turbo hybrid era, overseeing the Mercedes High Performance Powertrains project.

“Having implemented much needed structural changes as we transition to a full works team and set the foundations for Adrian and the wider organisation, it is an appropriate time for me to take a different role as chief strategy officer,” Cowell said.

“In this role, I will help to optimise the technical partnership between the team, Honda, Aramco and Valvoline and to ensure the seamless integration of the team’s new PU, fuel and chassis.”
