Mario Andretti has revealed his son Michael voluntarily stepped away from leading the 11th F1 team project after recognising he was an “obstacle”.
Andretti launched plans to form a new team several years ago and had his initial bid accepted by the FIA.
However, he was denied entry to the grid by F1 itself, who voiced issues over how competitive the team would be.
The situation changed when General Motors (GM) took over the reins of the project having already committed to supplying Andretti with power units from the 2028 campaign.
The bid has since been accepted by the FIA and GM is on course to join the grid next season as an 11th team.
Mario Andretti will remain part of the project on the board of directors.
“The aim was to get an American team on the grid, and we have achieved that,” Andretti told Auto Motor und Sport.
“Michael is also happy, even though he has withdrawn from the project.”
Following the initial rejection from F1, Michael Andretti questioned the decision publicly, going as far as to get the United States Department of Justice involved.
Having then recognised the scheme would be viewed more favourably with GM leading the way, he stepped aside.
“He [Michael] simply said: 'If I'm the obstacle, then I'll clear the way'” revealed Mario Andretti.
“Looking back, we could certainly have done some things better.
“But I never look back, only forwards. In the end, all that matters is whether you achieve the goal.”
