Andretti Formula Racing news

Andretti is a well-known name in international motorsport. In the mid-1960s, American Mario Andretti made his debut in the IndyCar/Champ Car. In 1965, 1966 and 1969, he became champion in this class. He also won the famous Indianapolis 500 in 1969. From the 1970s, Andretti was a regular in Formula 1, becoming world champion in 1978. In 1984, he became IndyCar champion again. Andretti - along with Dan Gurney - is the only driver who managed to win in both IndyCar, Formula 1, NASCAR and the IMSA championship.

Andretti has three children, two of whom are sons: Michael Andretti and Jeff Andretti. Michael made his Formula 1 debut in his 1993 season and drove 13 races for McLaren that year. He was also active in IndyCar, in which he had many successes. Jeff also raced in IndyCar for several seasons.

Today, Michael is co-owner of Andretti Autosport (a.k.a. Andretti Global), a team that has won four IndyCar championships and crossed the finish line first in the Indy 500 five times. Michael's son Marco Andretti currently races for his father's team in the IndyCar Series. Andretti Global is also active in Formula E with its Avalanche Andretti Formula E team, which won the 2022-2023 title with Jake Dennis. Andretti is also active in Extreme E under the name Andretti Altawkilat Extreme E.

Andretti F1

In late 2021, there were suggestions that Andretti Autosport could buy the F1 team of Sauber, the operators of the Alfa Romeo team, but these negotiations were unsuccessful.

On 18 February 2022, Mario Andretti announced that his son, Michael, had applied to the FIA - Formula 1's umbrella organisation - to compete with Andretti Global in 2024. A week later, Mario Andretti confirmed that they had an agreement with Renault to become the team's engine supplier. After the 2022 Miami Grand Prix, then Mercedes chief James Vowles spent a week with Andretti Autosport and explained to them the current state of Formula 1 and what it took to run a Formula 1 team.

In August 2022, the FIA stated that it did not intend to increase the number of teams on the Formula 1 grid. In doing so, some team bosses, including Mercedes' Toto Wolff and then Alfa Romeo team boss Frédéric Vasseur were against Andretti joining, saying Formula 1 needed big car manufacturers to add value to the sport. Christian Horner, team boss of Red Bull Racing, stressed that the problem was the distribution of profits, while Lawrence Stroll, owner of Aston Martin, was in favour of Andretti joining Formula 1. In another interview, Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, showed his support for Andretti and said other teams opposed to Andretti's entry were short-sighted.

Andretti Cadillac F1

On 5 January 2023, Andretti Global announced their intention to enter Formula 1 in partnership with General Motors brand Cadillac. However, the announcement did not mention whether Cadillac would produce its own powerplant or 'stick' its label on an existing engine. On 11 January, Michael Andretti stated that two existing teams had expressed their support for Andretti joining Formula 1, namely McLaren and Renault's Alpine team. FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem was surprised by the 'negative reaction' of the teams and Formula One Management (FOM) to Andretti's project and announced via social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that Andretti will have his full support.

On 2 October 2023, the FIA officially approved Andretti's bid to join the grid as the 11th team.
