Alonso vows to go for win as Verstappen edges him to Monaco pole

The Aston Martin driver will start on the front row for the Monaco Grand Prix alongside pole sitter Max Verstappen.

Fernando Alonso has vowed to go for the Monaco Grand Prix victory, after he was edged out to pole by Max Verstappen. The Aston Martin driver lost out by 0.084s to Verstappen, after the Dutchman elected to be the final driver to commence a fastest lap in the session. With the track evolution being a huge factor in the grip levels, the risky strategy paid off for Red Bull given the fine margins. Alonso lost out mainly in the final sector, with Verstappen gaining three tenths. "Obviously pole position means a lot here in Monaco but Max was a little bit faster, which is a shame," Alonso told media after the session. "But I think the first row on the grid for us is quite a big thing here, the last sector seems our weakest point of the of the circuit. "Let's see tomorrow and what do we can do in terms of a strategy and if there is any weather to come in or something but we will try to win."

Alonso: We need to capitalise on Verstappen's bad starts

Verstappen has often had issues with his starts throughout the season so far, something Alonso believes the team must capitalise on what is a relatively short run to the first corner. He added: "It's really short into turn one but we normally have good starts this year. Max is a little bit inconsistent, so maybe it's one of those bad ones tomorrow [for him]." The Aston Martin driver will be going for his first F1 victory in 10 years and his first win in Monaco since 2006.
