Fernando Alonso claims he it is "not a surprise" to see Aston Martin's current performance slump midway through the 2023 Formula 1 season. The team has struggled to replicate its early season form after taking silverware at six of the 12 races, with Alonso last standing on the podium in Canada in June. The AMR23 looked like it was comfortably the second quickest car behind Red Bull, but it has been a tight development war behind them with Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren all making significant performance gains. When asked about their change in fortunes midway through the year, Alonso told media, including RacingNews365 : "I said already in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia that more difficult times will come, obstacles will come during the championship in 22 races. "I think maybe we are in one of those moments and it's not a surprise."
Alonso: Up to us to overcome difficulties
Aston Martin Team Principal Mike Krack believes the small gaps between the teams behind Red Bull will make it easier for them to catch up. Alonso has praised the team's work ethic, as they look to take second in the Constructors' Championship away from Mercedes in the remaining 10 races. "It's up to us to overcome those difficulties and the way you approach these difficulties, I think we are approaching in the best way possible. "It's been a very humble way, trying to understand the issues, the performance of the car better than some of the teams that are doing a good job."
