Fernando Alonso believes that Max Verstappen has the potential to become the greatest F1 driver ever if he is able to remain in a good car. The Dutchman equalled Alonso's achievement of two World Championships at the Japanese Grand Prix, with both drivers also currently sitting on 32 race wins. For Alonso, the pursuit of a third title has so far gone unfulfilled since winning back-to-back championships in 2005 and 2006. However, he thinks that Verstappen can continue to be successful in Formula 1 if he has the right equipment.
Alonso outlines what Verstappen needs to be greatest
When asked ahead of the United States Grand Prix if Verstappen has what it takes to be considered the greatest ever should his current success continue, Alonso told media, including R acingNews365.com : "[If he] keeps going like this and [has] a good car? Yes. "If for whatever reason Red Bull is not winning in the next few years, he will finish with two World Championships."
How Verstappen can approach final races of 2022
With four races remaining in the 2022 season, Verstappen faces the scenario of approaching each weekend with the World Championship already wrapped up. Alonso also experienced a similar situation following his first title victory in 2005, with two Grands Prix left after he had taken the crown. When quizzed on how this can affect focus, Alonso suggested that Verstappen's performance could get even better in the final races. "It's different, [there's] no pressure, so you go into the weekend just a little bit more relaxed and ready to risk a little bit more," the Alpine driver explained. "In a way, I think it's even better in terms of Max's performance in the next four races, because he has nothing to worry [about]. "He will be free to risk and to use all the potential of the car and himself."
