Once upon a time, F1 drivers retained the same helmet design throughout their careers. Now it is popular to change at least once a season.

Heading into the fifth race of a record-equalling 24-grand prix calendar this year, with the circus pitching up in Saudi Arabia, Fernando Alonso will sport a special design that has reminded him of an event he once competed in.

Aston Martin's two-time F1 champion will wear a special Saudi-inspired helmet livery for the event at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit.

The helmet was created in collaboration with Sarah Turkestani, a young artist from the Kingdom, with the design selected by Alonso through a nationwide competition as part of Aramco’s Generation 3 initiative.

According to Aston, Alonso "loved the design’s Saudi Arabian desert landscapes which reminded him of his time competing in the Dakar Rally."

Alonso took part in the Rally in 2020, finishing 13th with Toyota.
