Kimi Antonelli finished third at the Mexico City Grand Prix, becoming the youngest F1 drivers' champion.
The Mercedes driver is the 36th winner of the crown and the first Italian champion in 73 years.
By taking victory at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Max Verstappen has vaulted up to second in the standings, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, who drops to fourth.
A post-race 10-second time penalty for his collision with Arvid Lindblad dropped Oscar Piastri from seventh place at the chequered flag to P16.
However, both Alpine drivers, who did stand to gain from the McLaren driver's misfortune, were also punished — for yellow flag infringements.
Pierre Gasly dropped from ninth to P17, behind Sergio Perez, whilst Franco Colapinto fell from an inherited seventh to P15.
That moved Liam Lawson up to that position, with Gabriel Bortoleto and Isack Hadjar joined by F1 debutant Ryo Hirakawa in the points, meaning the Japanese driver jumps up the standings.
