Kimi Antonelli continued his fine form to secure pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix with a 1m 28.877, in yet another Mercedes one-two.
It marked back-to-back poles for the Italian after his superb Shanghai performance, with McLaren's Oscar Piastri claiming third on the grid.
Charles Leclerc joined Piastri on the second row in fourth, ahead of reigning world champion Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton in sixth.
There was a considerable surprise in the second part of qualifying as Max Verstappen was eliminated after only managing to go 11th fastest.
