Oscar Piastri topped the second free practice session at Suzuka, on a strong opening day of the Japanese Grand Prix for McLaren.
Having ended FP1 in fourth, just behind Lando Norris, the Australian upped the ante in FP2, going quicker than both Mercedes drivers and his team-mate.
Behind Kimi Antonelli and George Russell sat the second MCL40, ahead of the Ferrari pair of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
The order behind the leading three teams was less clear, with Max Verstappen and Red Bull continuing to suffer with the idiosyncrasies of the RB22.
It was a late start to the session for Norris, with McLaren having to fix a hydraulic leak. Sergio Perez and Gabriel Bortoleto also endured difficulties.
Arvid Lindblad, however, was the only driver not to set a competitive lap time, with a gearbox issue on his Racing Bulls car.
Franco Colapinto will be the subject of a post-session investigation for potentially impeding Verstappen early in the second hour of running.
