Kimi Antonelli finished FP2 at the Austrian Grand Prix fastest, beating Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris during the second hour of running in Spielberg.
It is the first time the Italian driver has topped the middle free practice session all season, and it is the first time a driver has done the Friday double this year.
George Russell looked off the ultimate pace, ending the session down in sixth, with Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton between the Mercedes driver and the resurgent McLarens.
Charles Leclerc, back in his SF-26 after handing over the keys to Dino Beganovic for first free practice, could only manage eighth and was the slowest driver from the leading four teams.
Sergio Perez, having triggered a red flag for stopping on track at the end of FP1, came to a halt on track for the second time at the Red Bull Ring on just his second lap of FP2, bringing out a virtual safety car.
Between sessions, Cadillac had changed the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) in his car, but that was to no avail as the same issue from earlier in the day struck again.
Once the session resumed in anger, incidents were few and further between, but Norris did manage to spin his McLaren at Turn 3, appearing to have carried slightly too much speed into the corner.
Cadillac's painful weekend continued with a fire on the floor of Valtteri Bottas' MAC-26, the team confirming at the time that neither the Finnish driver nor Perez would likely reappear, which they did not.
